Aston Villa launch legal action against Jamie Carragher over 'unacceptable insults' to club and fans
Aston Villa have confirmed they will pursue legal action against Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher after he told Villa supporters to 'shut the f*** up' amid a row over Unai Emery's future. The statement, signed by chairman Nassef Sawiris, was posted on the club's social media on Friday night.
Aston Villa have announced they will take legal action against former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher following what the club described as “unacceptable insults about the Club and its fans,” with chairman Nassef Sawiris signing off the statement posted on the club’s official social media on Friday night.
The dispute stems from comments Carragher made on the Stick to Football podcast earlier this week, after Villa supporters pushed back on his suggestion that manager Unai Emery could be a candidate to take over at Manchester United. Carragher defended his position and closed his remarks by telling Villa fans to “shut the f*** up.”
Villa’s statement did not specify which comments triggered the legal threat, but made clear the club intends to act. “Aston Villa will not allow anyone to stop our ascension in English and European football,” the statement read.
Carragher had been making the case that Emery, given his remarkable track record in the Europa League, might eventually be tempted by the challenge of managing a club he described as “a giant.” He pointed to Emery’s difficult spells at PSG and Arsenal as evidence that the Spaniard could be drawn to a high-profile rebuild. “Aston Villa will never be Manchester United,” Carragher said. “There is a chain in football, whether you like it or not.”
Emery has been in charge at Villa Park since 2022, transforming the club from a side in the bottom half of the Premier League into a consistent European contender. Villa have qualified for the Champions League in two of the past three seasons and won the Europa League, with Emery achieving that while navigating significant squad turnover.
This summer alone, the club sanctioned the British record sale of Morgan Rogers to Chelsea, while goalkeeper Emi Martinez and defender Ezri Konsa also departed — Martinez to Chelsea and Konsa to Arsenal. That Emery has maintained Villa’s upward trajectory through repeated rebuilds has only strengthened his reputation, and it was precisely that quality Carragher was praising before the row escalated.
Carragher has not yet publicly responded to the club’s legal announcement.
