Leeds United have moved to complicate Manchester United’s midfield recruitment by tabling a £20m bid for Southampton’s Shea Charles, with Southampton pushing back on the offer and demanding a higher fee, according to The Athletic.

United had identified the 22-year-old as a potential target last month, but are yet to make a concrete approach of their own. Talks between Leeds and Southampton remain ongoing, leaving the door open for a prolonged battle over a player who can operate in both central midfield and central defence.

Charles joined Southampton from Manchester City in 2023, a move facilitated in part by United chief Jason Wilcox during his tenure at the south-coast club. The Northern Ireland international has since made 76 appearances for the Saints and had a loan spell at Sheffield Wednesday, though he missed out on Premier League promotion following the fallout from the Spygate scandal.

United’s midfield overhaul is already well underway. The club have agreed a £35m deal — with up to £3.8m in add-ons — to sign Atalanta’s Ederson, and have parted ways with Casemiro, who is heading to Inter Miami. Manuel Ugarte is also expected to depart after failing to establish himself in the starting XI under Michael Carrick.

The competition for midfield talent has been fierce across the board. United have been linked with Elliot Anderson, Sandro Tonali, and Mateus Fernandes, with Manchester City and Tottenham also circling those targets. Anderson and Tonali have attracted interest from City, while Spurs have been mentioned in connection with both the Newcastle winger and Fernandes.

Charles adds another layer of complexity to United’s summer planning. With Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes expected to anchor the midfield, the club are searching for depth and quality around them — and Leeds’ early move for Charles means United may need to act quickly or look elsewhere.
