Leeds refuse to name Man Utd as Karl Darlow makes first direct move between clubs in 22 years
Leeds United pointedly omitted any mention of Manchester United from their farewell statement after Karl Darlow, 35, joined the Red Devils on a free transfer — the first player to move directly between the two clubs since Alan Smith in 2004.
Leeds United declined to name Manchester United in their official statement confirming Karl Darlow’s departure, as the goalkeeper completed a free transfer to Old Trafford on Tuesday — becoming the first player to move directly between the two clubs in 22 years.
The 35-year-old leaves Elland Road after three seasons and 38 appearances, having rejected a new contract offer from Leeds. The Yorkshire club’s statement acknowledged only that Darlow had chosen “to pursue an opportunity elsewhere” and wished to “explore a different challenge”, with no reference to his destination.
Darlow becomes Manchester United’s second signing of the summer and is expected to provide competition in a goalkeeping group in which Senne Lammens remains the number one. The former Newcastle stopper is the latest in a storied line of players to cross the divide between the two clubs, following Gordon Strachan, Eric Cantona, Rio Ferdinand, and Alan Smith — the last player to make the same direct switch, back in 2004.
“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” Darlow said after the move was confirmed. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards this club demands. This is a really special opportunity — everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part.”
United’s director of football Jason Wilcox welcomed the addition. “Karl has proven his ability to perform at the highest level,” Wilcox said. “His work ethic and determined personality make him a really strong addition to our squad. We are delighted to add a player of his quality and experience to our excellent goalkeeping group.”
Darlow’s arrival follows United’s summer business in midfield, where the club has already secured deals for André Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa for a combined £85 million.
