New York City is preparing for one of its most chaotic sporting weekends in decades, with the New York Knicks one win away from their first NBA championship in 53 years and a World Cup match descending on the metropolitan area on the same night.

Game 5 of the NBA Finals takes place in San Antonio, 1,580 miles from Manhattan, but the city is organising multiple official watch parties to accommodate the surge of fans. The Knicks have arranged an outdoor event for up to 3,000 supporters outside Madison Square Garden, requiring advance registration and police screening, while additional viewings are planned at Radio City Music Hall and Wollman Rink in Central Park.

The evening’s complexity is compounded by Brazil facing Morocco at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — New York’s first World Cup fixture in 32 years. The football match kicks off approximately three hours before tip-off, and transit restrictions are expected to extend into Manhattan. Tens of thousands of football fans returning by train will pour through Penn Station, located directly beneath Madison Square Garden, just as Knicks fever reaches its peak.

A concert by Australian pop band 5 Seconds of Summer at the Garden — expected to draw between 15,000 and 20,000 people — rules out an indoor watch party and adds another layer of congestion to the area. A scorching heatwave has prompted city officials to advise residents to stay indoors where possible, and the weekend concludes Sunday with the National Puerto Rican Day Parade.

The watch party situation carries some political baggage. For Game 4, Knicks owner James Dolan declined to host an event after publicly criticising Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the police department over a security perimeter, metal detectors, and other restrictions put in place following President Donald Trump’s attendance at Game 3.

The Knicks arrive at Game 5 riding extraordinary momentum. They hold a 3-1 series lead over the San Antonio Spurs and have won 14 of their last 15 games since April 23. Their most recent victory was among the most dramatic of the postseason: OG Anunoby’s tip-in completed a 29-point comeback in Game 4, sending fans into scenes of pandemonium outside the Garden, with supporters in Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns jerseys flooding the streets and subway cars erupting as the winning shot circulated on phones throughout the city.
