Karl Darlow joins Manchester United on free transfer as backup to Senne Lammens
Karl Darlow has signed for Manchester United on a free transfer after leaving Leeds, where he made 22 Premier League appearances last season. The 35-year-old Wales international will serve as backup goalkeeper to first-choice Senne Lammens.
Karl Darlow has completed a free transfer to Manchester United from Leeds, the club confirmed, with the 35-year-old goalkeeper set to serve as backup to first-choice Senne Lammens next season.
Darlow spent three years at Elland Road and forced his way into Daniel Farke’s side last term, making 22 Premier League appearances. His contract at Leeds expired this summer, leaving him available without a fee.
“I am extremely proud to sign for Manchester United,” Darlow said. “I’m joining an excellent group of goalkeepers and I’m really looking forward to all pushing each other to ensure that we maintain the highest standards, which this club demands. This is a really special opportunity; everyone can see what an exciting time it is for the club and I cannot wait to play my part in supporting my team mates and helping to drive the group forwards.”
The signing addresses a pressing need at Old Trafford. Andre Onana, Altay Bayindir, and Radek Vitek are all expected to leave the club this summer, leaving United short of experienced goalkeeping cover. Darlow also strengthens the squad’s homegrown quota, a key factor in United’s recruitment decision.
Darlow brings considerable experience to the role, having earned 15 caps for Wales and spent nine years at Newcastle before his move to Leeds. Lammens, who joined United last summer, has established himself as the undisputed first choice, and Darlow’s arrival is designed to provide reliable competition and cover rather than challenge that hierarchy.
