Roma's £33m loan bid for Garnacho threatens Man United's move for Summerville
Roma have submitted a formal loan offer worth up to £33m for Chelsea's Alejandro Garnacho, while also emerging as rivals to Manchester United for West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville, who impressed at the World Cup.
Roma have made their first formal proposal to Chelsea for former Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, according to Sky Sport Italia, complicating the transfer picture for a player United retain a financial interest in. The Serie A club have simultaneously approached West Ham over Crysencio Summerville, a player Manchester United have been tracking this summer.
Roma’s offer for Garnacho is structured as a loan for €5m (£4m) with an option to make the move permanent for a further €35m (£29m) — a clause that could become an obligation if certain performance conditions are met. Chelsea are reported to be open to selling the 22-year-old Argentine after a difficult debut season at Stamford Bridge, where he made little impact as the Blues finished tenth in the Premier League and missed out on European football entirely.
Garnacho joined Chelsea from Old Trafford last summer for £40m. United negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause as part of that deal, meaning any future transfer fee would generate additional income for the club. Because Garnacho came through United’s academy — having joined from Atletico Madrid for just £100,000 in 2020 — the original £40m sale was recorded as pure profit under Premier League Profit and Sustainability Rules, with any sell-on income carrying the same accounting benefit.
The Summerville situation adds another layer of complexity. The Manchester Evening News understands United have a genuine interest in the Rotterdam-born winger, along with Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye, as Ruben Amorim looks to add quality on the left flank. Roma’s reported interest now means United face competition for a player whose stock rose sharply at the World Cup in North America.
Summerville, 24, scored twice and provided two assists in four appearances for the Netherlands before they were eliminated in the Round of 32 by Morocco on penalties. At club level, he scored seven goals and added five assists in 34 appearances for West Ham in 2025/26, but the Hammers’ relegation to the Championship has raised serious doubts about his future at the club. West Ham are reported to be accepting offers in the region of £50m.
