Harry Kane was crowned Ballon d’Or 2026 on Monday evening, ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal in an exceptionally tight ballot. The Bayern Munich striker wins the sport’s top individual award for the first time in his career.

The narrow margin between the top two caught observers’ attention. France Football’s editor-in-chief Vincent Garcia confirmed that the gap separating Kane from Mbappé was smaller than the 41 points that had decided between Rodri and Vinicius Jr in 2024 — a margin that “was not much even back then”. The Englishman’s victory came down to a handful of votes.

Lamine Yamal’s third-place finish was partly explained by vote fragmentation within the Spanish camp. Spain, world champions at the last tournament, stood out for their collective strength, making it difficult for jurors to identify an undisputed individual leader. “In Spain’s team that became world champions, there was a split in votes between Rodri and Lamine Yamal. Rodri took votes from Lamine in this ballot,” Vincent Garcia explained.

The trophy’s chief expanded on this point: “There was some fragmentation of votes among the Spanish players. Spain was a collective effort, so it was hard to really stand out an individual performance. Knowing that Lamine Yamal is world champion but scored one goal, he started injured. The jurors struggled to separate the Spanish players and pick one over another.”

This context of fragmented voting ultimately benefited Kane, whose consistency at the highest level — both in club and international football — convinced a majority of jurors, even though victory was decided by the narrowest of margins.
