Jordie Barrett linked with Lyon move as all three Barrett brothers eye post-2027 World Cup exits
Jordie Barrett's CV has reportedly landed on Lyon's desk as the Top 14 club explore a post-2027 Rugby World Cup signing. The 29-year-old All Blacks centre would follow brothers Beauden and Scott, both linked with Bristol Bears.
Jordie Barrett is the latest of the three Barrett brothers to be linked with a move to Europe after the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with French Top 14 club Lyon reportedly in early discussions over signing the versatile All Blacks back.
French outlet Midi Olympique reports that Barrett’s CV has reached the recruitment team at Lyon’s Stade de Gerland, with initial talks underway about the 29-year-old, who can operate at inside centre or almost anywhere across the backline. Barrett has scored 26 tries in 86 Test appearances for New Zealand and spent the 2024-25 season on sabbatical in the United Rugby Championship with Leinster.
At 6‘5 and 102kg, Barrett is an imposing prospect, but Lyon may not have the field to themselves. Japan’s Rugby League One is reported to be a competing destination, with the competition’s financial muscle making it an increasingly attractive option for New Zealand players over European clubs.
Lyon are simultaneously working to retain Fijian winger Jiuta Wainiqolo, who has scored seven tries in seven games this season and is contracted until 2028. The club are keen to tie him down on a longer-term deal, meaning any pursuit of Barrett would need to be managed alongside that priority.
All Blacks defence coach and former captain Tana Umaga has spoken in glowing terms about Barrett’s legacy, saying: “I think he’ll go down as, you know, one of the best we’ve had.”
Jordie would not be the only Barrett on the move if the reports prove accurate. Older brothers Beauden and Scott have both been linked with Premiership club Bristol Bears, though the club are thought unlikely to be able to afford both. Beauden, 35, is understood to be Bristol’s primary target as they look to replace veteran USA international AJ MacGinty, whose contract expires next summer. Lock Scott has also been mentioned in connection with the club.
