Steff Emanuel announced himself on the senior stage with a commanding performance as Cardiff claimed a 26-0 bonus-point victory over the Ospreys at St Helen’s, earning the 20-year-old inside centre the Player of the Match award and effusive praise from two of Wales’s greatest centres.

Emanuel was the creative engine behind Cardiff’s first three tries, delivering a long pass for Tom Bowen’s opener, contributing to the winger’s second score, and combining an initial carry with a grubber kick to put Josh Adams over. He then capped the night with a crucial defensive act, holding Keelan Giles up over the line to preserve the clean sheet. In total, he registered 15 carries and 17 tackles.

Double Grand Slam winner Tom Shanklin was unequivocal in his assessment. “Everything he did worked really well,” he said. “It’s the way he delivers balls late and there is a bit of a turn of pace on him as well. He was heavily involved in everything good that Cardiff did, both sides of the ball. He was very good in defence and brilliant in attack. He was probably perfect, I think. He showed what a class act he is. He sees things that other 12s don’t. This is a game where he has announced himself onto the senior stage. I think this is going to be his massive breakout year.”

Fellow two-time Slam winner Jonathan Davies, capped 96 times for Wales, was equally impressed. “He has the vision to see when the guy outside him is under pressure and then just hold it, use his footwork, carry it up and get to the gainline,” Davies said. “It’s just a sign of someone who has time on the ball. That’s a great quality to have in the midfield. He sees the game, he makes the right decisions. At a young age, that’s a great trait to have as an upcoming player. If Wales are going to persist with a playmaker at 12, he could potentially fill that role in the future.”

Emanuel himself was measured but clearly moved by the occasion. “It was an unbelievable game to play in,” he said. “It’s a bit of a cliche, but it’s the stuff you dream of as a kid. To come down here to St Helen’s and to win a game like that is one I’ll probably cherish for a long time. When the opportunities come round, you really have to relish them.”

The performance adds further momentum to a rising profile that saw Emanuel named Welsh Young Player of the Year by the country’s rugby writers earlier this season, following in the footsteps of Jamie Roberts, Ken Owens, Taulupe Faletau, Ellis Jenkins, and Blair Murray.
