Joey Barton will spend Christmas behind bars after a bail application made on his behalf was refused at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday 7 October, with his trial on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm with intent now adjourned until 2025.

The former Premier League midfielder, 44, was arrested in connection with an alleged serious assault that took place near a golf club in March. The alleged victim, Kevin Lynch, was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition, having sustained injuries to his face and body.

Barton has been held on remand since his arrest and has pleaded not guilty to the charge. His defence counsel, Tim Forte KC, made a bail application during an hour-long hearing, but the bid was rejected. Barton appeared at the hearing via video link from HMP Liverpool, wearing a grey Columbia fleece and glasses.

The case had been scheduled to go to trial at Liverpool Crown Court last week before being adjourned. No new trial date has been confirmed at this stage.
