Jesus embraces Plan B role at Barcelona after £12.85m move from Arsenal

Gabriel Jesus has completed a move to Barcelona on a three-year contract, with Arsenal receiving a fee that could reach £12.85million for the Brazilian striker who entered the final year of his deal at the Emirates.

Barcelona had prioritised signing Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez, but Atletico publicly declared they would not sell to a direct La Liga rival, forcing Barca to pursue alternatives. Jesus, who had also rejected an approach from Napoli, emerged as the beneficiary — landing a transfer he described as a lifelong ambition.

“It doesn’t annoy me [being Plan B to Alvarez], it doesn’t bother me,” Jesus said at his unveiling. “What annoys me is if people say I’m a bad guy, which has never happened in my life — or if I am not playing football, that bothers me.”

The 29-year-old arrived at Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022 for £45million but never fully established himself under Mikel Arteta, finishing his time in north London with 32 goals in 123 appearances. He slipped behind Kai Havertz and summer signing Viktor Gyokeres in the striking hierarchy, and was frozen out of first-team plans alongside Gabriel Martinelli ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Jesus acknowledged the personal and financial sacrifice involved in making the move happen. “I took a significant salary drop, but it’s a dream to be here,” he said. “But it wasn’t just me who had to make an effort to get the transfer over the line — Barca also played their part.”

The forward made 27 appearances for Arsenal last season as he continued his recovery from a cruciate ligament knee injury that kept him sidelined for the best part of a year. He insists he is now fully fit and ready to contribute immediately for Hansi Flick’s side, who required a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

“The last two years have been really complicated after the knee injury,” Jesus said. “I was out of the game for almost one year, but it’s in the past. I feel good physically now. I recovered well, returned to action for Arsenal and I am 100 per cent ready to play and give my all.”

Reflecting on the unexpected nature of the deal, Jesus added: “A week ago I received a message that it could happen. When I started to think it was a real possibility, I was so excited. At 29, I didn’t think I would have the chance to come to Barca. Now I can’t wait to start training and playing.”
