Bordeaux-Bègles will face Clermont-Auvergne in a winner-takes-all Top 14 regular-season finale on 6 June without France fly-half Matthieu Jalibert, who has been ruled out with a calf injury. The 27-year-old sustained the problem before Bordeaux’s recent league defeat to Toulon, despite being listed only as the 24th man following his starring role in the side’s European title retention against Leinster.

The injury is a significant setback for Bordeaux, who sit inside the top six on the strength of a losing bonus point from Toulon — meaning they finished within five points of their hosts at the Stade Mayol. A bonus-point victory over Clermont on the final weekend will guarantee them a quarter-final place, but anything less opens the door to rivals below them.

Clermont arrive at Bordeaux just two points adrift of their hosts, so a win for the visitors would lift them into the play-off positions, provided at least one of the teams immediately below Bordeaux also slips up. Ronan O’Gara’s La Rochelle sit one point behind Bordeaux and host a Stade Français side chasing a second-place finish and a direct semi-final berth, while fifth-place Racing 92 travel to league leaders Toulouse, who may rotate with the top spot already secured.

Should Bordeaux lose to Clermont, they can still survive — but only if they claim a losing bonus point and La Rochelle lose while Racing 92 lose without a bonus point. In that scenario, Bordeaux and Racing would be level on points, with Bordeaux advancing on superior head-to-head points difference, having split their two meetings this season.

The stakes could hardly be higher for a club that has now won back-to-back European titles yet remains without a Top 14 championship in the professional era. Jalibert’s absence removes one of the most influential players in world rugby from what promises to be a tense and consequential afternoon.
