Jaissle shuts down Man United's Lewis Hall pursuit with emphatic live TV response

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has made the club’s position on Lewis Hall unmistakably clear, telling former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel live on television that there is “no chance” of the 21-year-old left-back moving to Old Trafford this summer.

Schmeichel, working as a pundit during Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday, told Jaissle directly: “We’re after your left-back.” After briefly misreading the remark, Jaissle’s reply was emphatic: “No chance! No chance!” The exchange left little room for ambiguity over where Newcastle stand.

Hall has attracted significant attention heading into the final days of the transfer window. His omission from England’s World Cup squad surprised many observers and stoked speculation about his future at St James’ Park, with reports hinting at frustration on the player’s part. Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has been actively seeking a left-back, and Hall’s name has featured prominently in that search.

However, Newcastle’s resolve appears firm. The club has already sanctioned the departures of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon this summer, making it highly unlikely they would sanction the exit of another key asset with the window nearly closed.

With Hall seemingly unavailable, United may need to pivot to other targets. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has been mentioned as an alternative, and his absence from the squad for Sunday’s match against Elche drew attention. Barça manager Hansi Flick addressed the situation directly, saying: “I spoke with Alejandro Balde today and said to him that I think you’re not here 100%, so it’s best that you stay at home and clear your mind. We will talk again tomorrow. But I have NOT told Alejandro Balde to leave. I spoke with him this morning, I told him to think about it and that we’ll talk again tomorrow.”

Hall himself played the full 90 minutes against Liverpool, though his afternoon ended on a difficult note when he conceded a penalty after bringing down Victor Munoz in the area. Gary Neville, on commentary, noted the incident but was broadly complimentary: “Lewis Hall in all parts of this game, against Munoz and Ngumoha, has moved his feet. He’s not taken the lazier option to stand there and just put his leg out. He’s got low, he’s been really sharp in his defending.”

Hall is widely regarded as one of the Premier League’s most promising young full-backs and is considered a future England regular by many in the game. Jaissle’s public declaration suggests Newcastle have no intention of letting that asset walk out the door.
