Jaissle shuts down Lewis Hall to Man United talk with blunt two-word reply

Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle made his position on Lewis Hall’s future unambiguous on Sunday, responding to transfer speculation linking the left-back with Manchester United by telling pundit Peter Schmeichel “No chance!” during a live television interview after Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool.

Schmeichel, working as a pundit, put the question to Jaissle directly: “We’re [Man United] after your left-back.” The Newcastle manager initially misunderstood the remark before repeating his two-word dismissal with a laugh, leaving little room for interpretation.

Hall, 21, has emerged as one of the more highly regarded left-backs in the Premier League, making his omission from England’s World Cup squad this summer a notable talking point. Reports had suggested the defender was unsettled at St. James’ Park, adding momentum to speculation about his future.

Manchester United, now managed by Michael Carrick, are understood to be in the market for a left-back and have been monitoring Hall. However, Newcastle have already lost Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali, and Anthony Gordon this summer, and with the transfer window entering its final days, the club appear firmly opposed to any further departures.

With Hall now effectively ruled out, United will need to look elsewhere. Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde has been linked with a move to Old Trafford after being left out of the Spanish club’s squad to face Elche on Sunday. Barca manager Hansi Flick explained the omission, saying: “I spoke with Alejandro Balde today and said to him that I think you’re not here 109%, so it’s best that you stay at home and clear your mind. We will talk again tomorrow.”

RB Leipzig defender David Raum is another name that has been connected with United, while reported interest in Myles Lewis-Skelly and Antonee Robinson appears to have cooled. Carrick’s side opened their league campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Hull City, underlining the need for reinforcements across the squad before the window closes.
