Jaap Stam blasts four United players after 10-man City inflict derby humiliation

Manchester United were condemned by club legend Jaap Stam after losing 1-0 to a 10-man Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday, with the former centre-back singling out Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha for a lack of intensity and ideas.

Erling Haaland’s second-half goal settled the derby despite City having been reduced to 10 men for 67 minutes plus stoppage time. The Premier League’s refereeing body Pro Ref has since admitted an “error of judgment” from VAR officials, who failed to flag Enzo Fernandez as offside in the build-up to the goal.

The defeat leaves head coach Michael Carrick’s side 13th after four games — equalling the club’s joint-worst start to a Premier League season, matching last season’s dismal opening run under Ruben Amorim and the 1992-93 campaign. Carrick, who replaced the sacked Amorim on an interim basis in January and guided United to a third-placed finish, was handed the permanent role in May but has also overseen a defeat at Hull City and a draw at Everton this term.

Speaking shortly after the final whistle, Stam was unsparing in his assessment. “If you look at City and if you look at this game, it was easy for them today, even with 10 men,” he said. “Against 10 men, even if it’s City with the quality that they have, you would expect United to be on the front foot every time, to be very, very aggressive, even the strikers tracking back.”

Stam also criticised United’s inability to exploit their numerical advantage in possession. “If you have possession and they are dropping a little bit deeper, use the side, use the width of the game a little bit, put crosses in the box. But now sometimes, you feel like when they’re playing, there’s not a real idea in how to get to opportunities and how to make it difficult for the opposition.”

Pointing to the build-up to Haaland’s goal, Stam highlighted the front four’s apparent disengagement from defensive duties. “It’s a long ball, they win it, City takes over and look at the front four — they’re just walking,” he said.

The result deepens the pressure on Carrick as United prepare to navigate an already difficult early-season period, with questions mounting over the team’s tactical identity and collective work rate.
