Insulting chants at the Vélodrome: OM faces fine and partial stadium closure after Classique

Olympique de Marseille could face disciplinary sanctions from the LFP following insulting chants from some of its supporters during the Classique against PSG on Sunday evening at the Vélodrome. Marseille lost 1-2 in this first derby of the season.

From the warm-up onwards, chants targeting Ousmane Dembélé’s mother were heard in the stadium’s sections, accompanied by insults directed at the Paris club. These verbal outbursts continued throughout the match, without intervention from the stadium announcer or the LFP stopping play.

The lack of reaction from the authorities sparked strong criticism, particularly from PSG supporters and journalists. The PSG Community X account denounced unequal treatment: “There were insults directed at Ousmane Dembélé’s mother and insulting chants, but no message from the announcer or match stoppage. When it’s at the Parc, though, they stop everything.” Journalist Lassana Camara also reacted, describing the chants as “shameful and grotesque.”

On the regulatory front, OM faces several types of sanctions. For insulting chants or inappropriate behavior by its supporters within its stadium, the club can be fined anywhere from several thousand to several tens of thousands of euros. A partial closure of stands for one or more matches is another possible sanction. Everything will now depend on the LFP’s decision whether or not to open a disciplinary investigation.
