Humphrey Ker steps down from Wrexham board after masterminding Reynolds and McElhenney takeover

Humphrey Ker, the man who engineered one of football’s most unlikely Hollywood stories, has left Wrexham’s board after more than four years at the heart of the club’s transformation.

The 43-year-old actor and comedian was the driving force behind introducing American film stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to the Welsh club in 2021. Following the takeover at the Racecourse Ground, Ker was appointed executive director and became a prominent figure in the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham. He had already stepped back from day-to-day operations in 2024 before formally relinquishing his board seat and his trusteeship of the Wrexham AFC Foundation.

“Working for and representing Wrexham and the wider town has been the greatest honour of my life,” Ker said in a statement on the club’s website. “I am proud of the part I have played in the club’s remarkable journey, both on and off the field. The way the club has evolved and is now structured has made it progressively harder for me to make a positive contribution so, sad as I am to be leaving, I now feel watching from a distance is the right thing for me.”

McElhenney and Reynolds paid tribute to their departing colleague with characteristic warmth. “Humphrey has been a key piece of the Wrexham story from day one and his kindness, humour, and height, will be missed but never forgotten,” the co-owners said — a nod to Ker’s 6ft 7in frame.

Despite Ker’s exit, McElhenney and Reynolds show no signs of loosening their grip on the club. The pair recently purchased The Turf, a pub adjacent to the Racecourse Ground, describing the acquisition as “a continuation of the strategy to protect the future of the club and its interests by ring fencing key areas related to the life of the club.”

The venue carries significant historical weight: originally named the Turf Hotel, it is the site where Wrexham AFC was founded in 1864 and features prominently in the docuseries, now in its fifth season, that has turned the north Wales club into a globally recognised name.
