Anthony Hernandez returns to headline UFC Sacramento on August 22, facing Gregory Rodrigues in a five-round main event, with the middleweight intent on ending his post-Strickland slump in emphatic fashion.

Hernandez had built one of the division’s more impressive streaks — eight consecutive wins — before Sean Strickland halted him in the third round at UFC Houston earlier this year. The loss snapped his momentum at the worst possible moment, but rather than dwell on the defeat, Hernandez has channelled it into something sharper.

“I want to hurt somebody, man,” Hernandez said. “I want to finish somebody. I want to fcking make somebody hate their fcking life. I am not here to f*cking get a decision.”

The 15-3 fighter, known as “Fluffy”, has been preparing at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas — and in a notable twist, Strickland himself has been part of that camp. Whether training alongside the man who stopped him has sharpened his edge or simply underlined what he needs to fix, Hernandez is clearly not carrying any visible resentment.

Standing across from him in Sacramento will be Rodrigues, a dangerous opponent in his own right. The Brazilian holds a 19-6 record and has won six of his last seven bouts, making him a credible test for anyone looking to re-establish themselves in the middleweight picture.

Hernandez has headlined his last two UFC events, going 1-1 in that stretch. A finish on home soil in California would go a long way toward restoring the momentum Strickland took from him in February.
