Henman vows to sneak England vs DR Congo onto screen during Wimbledon commentary duty
BBC Wimbledon pundit Tim Henman says he will find a way to watch England face DR Congo in the World Cup round of 32 on Wednesday evening in Atlanta, even if it means sneaking a screen into the commentary box.
Tim Henman has pledged to keep one eye on England’s World Cup round of 32 clash with DR Congo on Wednesday evening, even if his BBC Wimbledon commentary commitments prevent him from watching properly.
The former British No. 1, now a familiar face on the BBC’s Wimbledon coverage, told The Sun he has watched every England game at the tournament so far and has no intention of missing their knockout opener in Atlanta. “I’m always a fan when the national team is playing,” Henman said. “I’ve watched every game so far and I’ll definitely be watching tomorrow.”
He then joked about the logistical challenge: “If I’m commentating then there might be an extra screen in the commentary box with the football on the side.”
The 51-year-old’s dilemma reflects the unusual scheduling of this summer’s tournament, with the World Cup running concurrently with Wimbledon across the coming fortnight.
Thomas Tuchel’s England side topped Group L — recording wins over Croatia and Panama and a goalless draw with Ghana — to advance to the last 32. Victory over DR Congo in Atlanta on Wednesday would set up a potential last-16 meeting with co-hosts Mexico, who beat Ecuador 2-0 in their own round of 32 tie.
Should England progress further, they could face either Brazil or Norway in the quarter-finals, with the prospect of coming up against Vinicius Jr, Mateus Cunha, Erling Haaland, or Martin Odegaard depending on results elsewhere.
Several heavyweight nations have already exited the tournament. Germany were eliminated by Paraguay and the Netherlands knocked out by Morocco, with both ties decided on penalties.
