Tottenham seal £85m Mateus Fernandes deal after outbidding Manchester United in late twist
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth around £85million to sign Portugal midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, after sporting director Johan Lange outbid Manchester United, who withdrew when the fee exceeded their valuation.
Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a deal worth around £85million to sign Mateus Fernandes from West Ham, ending a transfer battle with Manchester United that went to the wire. The 21-year-old Portugal international is now set to undergo a medical ahead of a move to north London, with a long-term contract expected to follow.
Manchester United were firmly in the running for the former Southampton midfielder, but withdrew their interest once the financial demands surpassed their valuation of the player. According to Football.london, it was Spurs sporting director Johan Lange who ultimately tipped the balance, increasing Tottenham’s offer to a level United were unwilling to match. The Red Devils are understood to have maintained a disciplined approach to recruitment, pursuing only players fully committed to the Old Trafford project — and Fernandes kept the door open to Spurs throughout negotiations.
West Ham subsequently gave Fernandes permission to complete his medical, paving the way for the deal to be finalised. The playmaker will become Tottenham’s fifth signing of the summer, joining Andrew Robertson, Marco Senesi, Jan Paul van Hecke, and Martin Dúbravka.
The move reflects the ambition of head coach Roberto De Zerbi, who signalled sweeping changes were coming at the end of last season. Speaking after a final-day victory over Everton that secured Premier League survival, De Zerbi was candid about the scale of the rebuild he envisaged.
“From tonight, we have to start to organise and to build a new team,” he said. “I think we have now to change too many players. We have 10, 11, 12 players good enough to stay. Good enough. Like players. Especially like people. And then we have to complete the squad with the first level of players.”
Spurs are not expected to stop at Fernandes, either. The club have held discussions over a potential move for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, though they face significant competition for his signature as well.
