Henderson stretchered off after freak fall celebrating England's 3-2 win over Mexico
Jordan Henderson was carried off on a stretcher after falling over advertising hoardings while celebrating England's dramatic 3-2 last-16 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca. The Brentford midfielder landed on his arm and required immediate medical attention.
Jordan Henderson was stretchered off the pitch after suffering a freak injury during England’s post-match celebrations following their 3-2 World Cup last-16 victory over Mexico at the Estadio Azteca.
The Brentford midfielder fell awkwardly on his arm while climbing back over the advertising hoardings after joining his teammates in singing “Wonderwall” to the travelling England supporters — a ritual the squad has observed after every win at the tournament. Medics attended to Henderson on the pitch before carrying him to the England dressing room on a stretcher.
England had led 2-0 at half-time through a Jude Bellingham double, but the second half turned chaotic when Jarell Quansah was sent off, leaving the ten men to withstand a sustained Mexican onslaught before holding on for a place in the quarter-finals.
Harry Kane played down the severity of the incident in the immediate aftermath. “Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s OK. It’s something to do with his arm,” the England captain said.
Bellingham was more guarded. “He’s in a bit of bother, but our medical team have got everything under control,” the midfielder said. “Probably best for me not to say too much. We’re there to support him.”
The full extent of Henderson’s injury had not been confirmed at the time of reporting, with further updates expected from the England camp.
