Jordan Henderson was stretchered off the field after injuring his arm during England’s post-match celebrations following their round-of-16 victory over Mexico at the 2026 World Cup. The incident cast a shadow over what had been a joyous moment for the squad and their supporters.
The injury occurred shortly after the final whistle as players and staff gathered behind the goal in front of England’s travelling fans. After the group sang along to Oasis’ “Wonderwall” with supporters, the mood shifted sharply when Henderson fell to the ground after leaping over an advertising board. Teammates, coaching staff, and medical personnel rushed to his side immediately.
Defender Dan Burn confirmed the injury to The Athletic following the match, though he said the severity remained unclear. Harry Kane also acknowledged the incident pitchside, saying: “Hendo just fell over there,” while pointing toward the end of the field where it happened.
England’s team officials have not yet issued a formal update on Henderson’s condition or a potential timeline for his return. The 2026 World Cup is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Henderson has had a limited role in England’s tournament so far, making just one appearance across five matches — coming on for the final six minutes of the group-stage win over Panama. He was also shown a yellow card from the substitutes’ bench during Sunday’s victory over Mexico.
The timing is particularly unfortunate for the midfielder, who had been working to force his way back into Gareth Southgate’s plans. England will now await medical assessments before knowing whether Henderson can continue in the tournament.
