Hat-trick in UEFA Youth League debut makes 15-year-old Gabriel United's youngest scorer in the competition

JJ Gabriel marked his UEFA Youth League debut with a hat-trick as Manchester United’s Under-19s demolished Sabah FK Under-19s 5-0 at Leigh Sports Village on Thursday, making the 15-year-old the youngest player ever to score three goals for the club in the competition — at 15 years and 339 days old.

Amir Ibragimov opened the scoring inside two minutes and Jacob Watson doubled the lead on 16 minutes before Gabriel took over, netting in the 45th, 85th and 87th minutes to cap a commanding victory for Adam Lawrence’s side.

The performance adds to an already remarkable record at youth level. Gabriel scored 28 goals across 35 appearances for United’s Under-18s last season and has continued that form since stepping up to the Under-21s in Premier League 2 this term, contributing two goals and two assists in his first two outings before Thursday’s European breakthrough.

The hat-trick also intensifies speculation about a potential first-team debut under head coach Michael Carrick. Premier League regulations require a player to have turned 15 on or before 31 August of a given season to be eligible for league selection. Gabriel met that threshold ahead of the 2026/27 campaign, meaning he is now eligible to appear in the top flight. Should Carrick hand him a senior debut before he turns 16 in October, Gabriel would become United’s youngest-ever first-team player.

Carrick has already been monitoring the teenager closely, regularly including him in first-team training sessions and naming him in the squad for pre-season fixtures over the summer.

“JJ is a big talent — it’s pretty obvious to know that — and he’s had a really good season for the Under-18s,” Carrick said earlier this season. “We obviously think an awful lot of him, but patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and working with him in development, as we do with all the different younger players, and picking the right moment to step up.”

Whether that moment arrives before Gabriel’s 16th birthday remains to be seen, but Thursday’s display will do little to slow the conversation.
