Erling Haaland and Harry Kane will go head-to-head in the World Cup quarter-finals on Saturday when Norway face England for a place in the semi-finals, and five pundits have delivered their verdicts on which striker is currently the better player — with only one siding with the England captain.

Both forwards have been among the tournament’s standout performers. Haaland holds a one-goal lead over Kane in the Golden Boot race and arrived at the quarter-final stage on the back of a stunning brace in the final ten minutes of normal time that dumped Brazil out of the competition, with Neymar Jr pulling one back from the penalty spot in the dying seconds to make it 2-1.

Kane, meanwhile, scored in England’s 3-2 victory over Mexico — a match played in the charged atmosphere of the Azteca with his side reduced to ten men for a significant stretch. Both men captain their countries and lead their respective attacks, making Saturday’s clash a compelling personal duel within the broader team contest.

The pair also arrive in strong club form. Kane scored 61 goals and provided seven assists as Bayern Munich won the domestic treble, while Haaland contributed 38 goals and nine assists for Manchester City, helping them to the FA Cup and Carabao Cup despite missing out on the Premier League title.

Jamie Carragher — Haaland

The former Liverpool defender, speaking on Sky Sports Super Sunday last October, was unequivocal. “I think we’re watching the greatest goalscorer to ever play in English football,” Carragher said. “I think of Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer, Harry Kane and Ian Rush for my club Liverpool. There’s a difference for me between a great centre-forward or striker and a goalscorer. I think what we’re witnessing now is something we’ve never seen before in our game — and don’t forget, this is a club where the goalscorer beforehand was Sergio Aguero, one of the greatest we’ll ever see. This is on a completely different level to Aguero. He’s the best.”

Sam Allardyce — Haaland

Allardyce also came down on the side of the Norwegian, acknowledging Kane’s qualities but ultimately placing Haaland above him at this moment in time.

With four of the five pundits surveyed backing Haaland and only one opting for Kane, the consensus leans heavily toward the Manchester City striker heading into what promises to be one of the most anticipated individual match-ups of the tournament.
