Haaland has scored in 14 straight Norway games — and England face him on Saturday
Erling Haaland carries a 14-game scoring streak into Norway's World Cup quarter-final against England in Miami, a run that includes 27 goals and three hat-tricks. His habit of striking late makes him a threat England cannot afford to switch off against.
Erling Haaland takes a 14-game competitive scoring streak for Norway into Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final against England in Miami, a run that has produced 27 goals — including three hat-tricks — and raised serious questions about how Gareth Southgate’s side can contain him.
At 25, Haaland is already Norway’s all-time leading scorer with 62 international goals. The previous record holder, Jorgen Juve, managed 33 — the last of which came in 1934. Haaland has more than doubled that tally.
The scale of his achievement at this tournament is equally striking. He has scored as many World Cup goals in his debut tournament as Romelu Lukaku and Luis Suarez managed across their entire careers, and just one fewer than Diego Maradona — all three of whom played at four World Cups.
Within his current 14-game streak, Haaland has scored braces against Brazil, Senegal and Italy, and contributed five goals in an 11-1 demolition of Moldova. The only interruption to his form came in two pre-tournament friendlies — a goalless draw against Switzerland, in which he played 63 minutes, and a 1-1 draw with Morocco, where he lasted 72.
Perhaps the most unsettling detail for England’s coaching staff is when Haaland tends to do his damage. His double against Brazil saw the first goal arrive in the 79th minute. His winner against Ivory Coast came in the 86th. Both goals against Senegal were scored in the second half. Against Italy in November, his opener did not come until the 78th minute.
Iraq are the only side Haaland has scored against in the first half of any of his past eight Norway appearances. In the Premier League, you have to go back to February for the last time he scored before the 65th minute in a league game — though he did find the net against Liverpool and Real Madrid in cup competition during that same period, which offers England little reassurance.
For a team that has at times struggled to maintain defensive concentration in the closing stages of knockout games, the combination of Haaland’s late-game menace and his record-breaking consistency represents one of the most demanding individual challenges England have faced at this tournament.
