Guendouzi shouts « Come on OM! » at Groupama Stadium and triggers mass brawl

Mattéo Guendouzi turned Lyon’s elimination into a diplomatic incident. Thursday evening at Groupama Stadium, after Fenerbahçe’s 2-1 victory in the Champions League playoff return leg, the French midfielder shouted « Come on OM! » toward the Lyon stands and made the gesture of rapper Jul, triggering violent clashes at the entrance to the tunnel leading to the dressing rooms between players and staff from both clubs.

Guendouzi, who left Olympique de Marseille in 2023 to join Lazio before signing with Fenerbahçe, justified himself by claiming that his family — his mother and children — had been insulted by the Rhône valley crowd during the match. An explanation that consultant Pierre Ménès dismissed bluntly on his YouTube channel.

« What can you say about the end of that match except that Mattéo Guendouzi behaved abominably, repugnantly. You left OM years ago, what are you going to sing ‘Come on OM!’ on the pitch for? », Ménès said. « That’s really the reaction of a little jerk. I thought Mattéo had grown up a bit, unfortunately that’s not the case. He almost sparked two mass brawls on the pitch and that’s extremely regrettable. »

The consultant also questioned potential UEFA sanctions against the player. « Let him be happy, that’s normal, his club is in the Champions League. But to have such an attitude toward the Lyon crowd and players, that’s scandalous. He had the nerve to go play nice with Tolisso at the end of the match… It’s a stain on this match. These are not things you do. »

Lyon, for its part, will have to digest a double blow: European elimination and images of an evening tarnished by scenes of chaos just meters from the dressing rooms.
