Guehi and Rice emerge as doubts for England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway
England face a significant injury scare ahead of their World Cup quarter-final against Norway, with Marc Guehi nursing a hamstring strain and Declan Rice sidelined by illness. Thomas Tuchel is also without Jarell Quansah, who is serving a two-match ban.
England’s preparations for their World Cup quarter-final against Norway in Miami have been disrupted by fitness concerns over Marc Guehi and Declan Rice, with Thomas Tuchel already missing Jarell Quansah through suspension.
Guehi has been absent from training this week with a hamstring strain picked up during England’s dramatic victory over Mexico. The concern is heightened by the fact that his club teammate Erling Haaland — in formidable form at this tournament — is likely to lead the Norwegian attack. Rice, meanwhile, has been kept away from the squad entirely due to illness, with staff wary of the bug spreading through the group ahead of Friday’s match-eve session.
Quansah’s absence is already confirmed after the defender received a two-match ban following his red card, leaving Tuchel with a backline that may need significant remodelling before kick-off.
Norway arrive at the quarter-final stage on the back of a notable scalp, having knocked out Brazil in the previous round. Haaland has been in prolific form throughout the competition and has publicly placed the pressure on England, a stance that will do little to ease the mood in the England camp as they manage their injury list.
Tuchel is expected to have a clearer picture of Guehi and Rice’s availability after the squad’s scheduled training session on Friday evening. If both are ruled out, England will face one of the tournament’s most dangerous strikers with a makeshift defensive unit.
