Manchester United stand to receive up to £17m from Mason Greenwood’s impending departure from Marseille, after the former academy graduate edges closer to a £34.1m switch to Fenerbahce this summer.

Greenwood, who left Old Trafford for Marseille in a £26.6m deal in 2024, is nearing the end of weeks of negotiations between the French club and the Turkish side. According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Fenerbahce have raised their offer and included add-ons to bring the total close to Marseille’s £42m valuation, with the deal now expected to go through.

United negotiated a sell-on clause as part of the original agreement that took Greenwood to the Stade Vélodrome, entitling them to up to 50 per cent of any future transfer fee. On the basis of the reported £34.1m figure, that clause would generate approximately £17m for the club.

The timing is significant for United, who are understood to be finalising a £50m signing of Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos from Chelsea. The 22-year-old is set to undergo a medical ahead of signing a long-term contract at Old Trafford, with an announcement expected within days following Brazil’s exit from the World Cup. Manager Michael Carrick is expected to pair Santos alongside Ederson in central midfield.

Greenwood’s form at Marseille made the sell-on clause increasingly valuable. The forward scored 26 goals and contributed 11 assists across all competitions in 2025/26, earning a place in Ligue 1’s team of the season and attracting interest from Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, and Juventus before Fenerbahce moved to the front of the queue.

Greenwood had previously indicated a desire to remain in France, but Marseille appear to have decided to cash in. Speaking after receiving his Ligue 1 end-of-season honour, he acknowledged a difficult collective campaign, particularly in the closing months of the season.

The 23-year-old left United in 2024 after the club concluded he could no longer remain following the dropping of charges — which he denied — related to attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour, first brought in 2022. He spent the 2022/23 season on loan at Getafe before making the permanent move to Marseille.
