Ronaldo walks out of Portugal camp after Jesus drops him for Denmark clash

Cristiano Ronaldo walked out of Portugal’s training camp on Wednesday, hours after head coach Jorge Jesus publicly confirmed the record-breaking forward would not start Thursday’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Denmark.

Ronaldo announced his departure on Instagram, stating he had made the decision following Jesus’s pre-match press conference and a subsequent conversation with the president of the Portuguese Football Federation. “In time,” he wrote, he would “tell the Portuguese people the truth about the reasons” behind his exit, while insisting he had always “dedicated” himself to the national side.

Jesus, speaking at his pre-game briefing, was direct about his selection plans but moved to dismiss suggestions of a rift between the two. The coach said every player understands that selection decisions rest with the manager, and that Ronaldo had told him personally he would accept whatever choices were made. Jesus confirmed that Gonçalo Ramos was set to lead the line against Denmark if all went to plan, adding: “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the game. If we need him to play at some point, he’ll play. If not, he won’t.”

The tension had been building since Sunday, when Ronaldo did not feature in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Norway. He had not trained with the main group since that match, fuelling widespread speculation about the state of his relationship with Jesus.
