Greenwood to Fenerbahçe: Social media follow fuels transfer rumours
Mason Greenwood, Olympique de Marseille's standout player over the past two seasons, is expected to leave the club this summer. A Fenerbahçe presidential candidate claims to have reached an agreement with the striker, who has since followed him on social media.
Mason Greenwood could leave Olympique de Marseille this summer, two seasons after his arrival from Manchester United. Among the destinations mentioned, Fenerbahçe stands out for a notably direct statement from one of its presidential candidates.
Hakan Safi, a candidate to lead the Istanbul club and chairman of Safi Holding — a group active in logistics, ports and maritime sectors — claimed to have reached an agreement with the English striker. “We managed to find an agreement with Greenwood. The contract is ready, until 2030, provided I win the election,” he said. Greenwood has since followed Safi on social media, a gesture that did not go unnoticed by observers.
Arrived at Marseille in summer 2024 for €26 million, Greenwood established himself as the club’s most valuable asset. According to Transfermarkt, his market value has more than doubled since his transfer. Manchester United had also negotiated a resale clause of between 40% and 50%, which would represent a substantial sum for the Red Devils in the event of a sale.
Despite these performances, no Premier League club appears willing to recruit him for now. In January 2022, Greenwood was accused of domestic violence and attempted rape by Harriet Robson, his partner at the time, with whom he remains in a relationship. A trial was set for November of the same year, before the charges were eventually dropped.
The Turkish option remains conditional on the outcome of the presidential election at Fenerbahçe, but the signal sent by Greenwood on social media leaves little doubt about his interest in this project.
