Mason Greenwood is set to join Fenerbahce from Marseille in a deal worth around €40m (£34.1m), snubbing Serie A side Roma to move to the Turkish Super Lig. The agreement, reported by RMC Sport, will also trigger a £5.6m windfall for Manchester United through a sell-on clause embedded in his original transfer to France.

Roma had been considered the frontrunner for Greenwood’s signature, with the Italian club previously willing to put together a €45m (£38.5m) package. Fenerbahce ultimately prevailed, with the lure of a four-year contract worth approximately €10m (£8.5m) per season understood to be a decisive factor in the 23-year-old’s decision.

United negotiated a 40 percent share of any profit Marseille made on Greenwood when he moved to the Ligue 1 club. With Marseille set to sell him for €40m, the Red Devils stand to receive around €6m (£5.6m) once the deal is finalised.

Greenwood spent two seasons at Marseille after leaving Old Trafford, and his departure this summer had been widely anticipated. The move to Fenerbahce now appears all but confirmed pending final formalities.

Off the pitch, Greenwood’s international future remains unresolved. Having previously represented England at youth level, he was reported to be considering a switch of allegiance to Jamaica. Former Jamaica head coach Steve McLaren confirmed the nation had secured a passport for the striker but revealed he had stepped back from committing to any international team for now.

“We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp,” McLaren said. “But in a conversation with his family, he’s not going to commit at this time to anybody. He’s taking his time over that, so it’s a little bit disappointing. We probably have to be more patient, but we will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica.”

McLaren added that Greenwood had expressed a desire to focus on club football before making any international commitment, leaving the door open for Jamaica to revisit the situation in the future.
