Greenwood sale to Fenerbahce could hand Manchester United £19m windfall this summer
Manchester United stand to earn around £19m from Mason Greenwood's expected move to Fenerbahce, thanks to a 40 per cent sell-on clause inserted into his £26.6m sale to Marseille in 2024.
Manchester United could pocket approximately £19m this summer if Mason Greenwood completes an anticipated move to Fenerbahce, with the club’s 40 per cent sell-on clause from his 2024 departure to Marseille set to pay dividends. Marseille are reportedly seeking a minimum of £43m for the forward, which would trigger a substantial return for Michael Carrick’s rebuilding side.
Greenwood left Old Trafford in the summer of 2024 after being suspended by the club following allegations of sexual assault, which he strenuously denied. The charges were subsequently dropped, and Marseille paid £26.6m to secure his services. He has since re-established himself as one of the more effective forwards in European football.
The deal’s completion hinges partly on the outcome of Fenerbahce’s presidential election. Candidate Hakan Safi has publicly claimed a four-year agreement with Greenwood is already in place, pending his victory. “We have signed a four-year agreement with Mason Greenwood,” Safi said. “He has agreed to join Fenerbahce during the most valuable and productive years of his career. I said I would bring a star player. Today, I am experiencing the justified pride of keeping my promise.”
The other frontrunner, former Fenerbahce president Aziz Yildirim, is also reported to be keen on signing Greenwood should he reclaim his old role, meaning United’s sell-on fee appears likely to materialise regardless of the election result. Greenwood is said to have fuelled speculation himself by following Safi on Instagram.
The potential windfall arrives at a timely moment for Carrick, who is overseeing what is shaping up to be one of United’s busiest transfer windows in recent memory. The incoming funds would provide additional flexibility as the club looks to reshape its squad ahead of the new season.
