Steven Gerrard dismissed Manchester United’s approach in seconds, telling Gary Neville to “just leave” after the defender arrived at his England hotel room to relay Sir Alex Ferguson’s interest in signing him from Liverpool.

Speaking on the Open Goal podcast, Gerrard recalled the moment Neville knocked on his door during an international camp, acting as an unlikely intermediary on Ferguson’s instructions. “I like Gary, he’s a good guy, but I was like, ‘What does he want me for?’” Gerrard said. Neville’s message was straightforward: would there be any possible chance Gerrard would play for Manchester United?

The reply was equally direct. “Gary, just leave,” Gerrard told him. When Neville asked if he needed time to think it over, Gerrard was unequivocal: “It’s impossible, it’s just not going to happen, mate. I’m flattered for you knocking and stuff. Please send my regards to Sir Alex Ferguson but it cannot happen. It won’t happen. It was as simple as that.”

Gerrard spent his entire senior playing career at Liverpool, though he did entertain approaches from Chelsea on more than one occasion. He acknowledged that a move to Everton carried a different kind of taboo — noting that players have crossed that divide before — but insisted a direct switch to United was in a category of its own. “I don’t think that would ever happen. I’d be extremely surprised anyway,” he said.

While players such as Paul Ince and Michael Owen have represented both clubs, Ince’s move involved a spell at Inter Milan in between. A direct transfer between the two sides in the men’s senior game has remained virtually unheard of for decades.

Ferguson, for his part, never hid his admiration for Gerrard. In an interview with The Times early in the midfielder’s career, the United manager acknowledged the near-impossibility of such a deal. “What I’ll say is that we would show an interest if we thought there was any chance, but realistically I don’t think he would ever come here,” Ferguson said, adding that the Liverpool-to-United route was a fundamentally different proposition to signings like Rio Ferdinand or Alan Smith, who both arrived from Leeds. “I could name you 15 players who have gone between Leeds and Manchester United, but no player has gone directly between Liverpool and Manchester United in something like 40 years.”
