Gasly and Colapinto penalised post-race as Hirakawa scores points on F1 debut at Mexico GP
Both Alpine drivers were stripped of their points finishes after failing to slow under yellow flags at the Mexico Grand Prix, handing Haas debutant Ryo Hirakawa a 10th-place finish in his first Formula 1 race.
Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto have been handed post-race time penalties that drop both Alpine drivers out of the points at the Mexico Grand Prix, with the revised classification handing Haas debutant Ryo Hirakawa a points finish on his Formula 1 debut at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Gasly was issued a stop-and-go penalty — converted to 30 seconds post-race — for failing to slow sufficiently under double waved yellow flags. Colapinto received a 10-second penalty for a separate single yellow flag infringement. The stewards had also investigated Colapinto for a double yellow sector but cleared him of wrongdoing, citing “sufficient doubt that the driver had sufficient warning in order to comply with the requirements.” Gasly falls to 17th in the final standings; Colapinto to 15th.
A further 10-second penalty for McLaren’s Oscar Piastri — issued for contact with Arvid Lindblad — compounds the shake-up in the lower points positions. Liam Lawson inherits seventh place, Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto moves into eighth, and Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar climbs to ninth. Hirakawa rounds out the top ten in 10th.
The Japanese driver’s presence on the grid was itself a late development. Haas opted to bench Esteban Ocon on Friday night for unspecified reasons, handing Hirakawa — a Le Mans-class driver with no prior F1 race starts — the seat at short notice. His debut point is now confirmed by the stewards’ decisions rather than anything that unfolded on track in the provisional results.
The penalties represent a significant blow for Alpine, who had appeared to secure a double points finish before the post-race investigations concluded. Both drivers had been under scrutiny from the FIA stewards following the race, and neither escaped without sanction.
