Antonelli becomes F1's youngest-ever world champion at 20 in Mexico City
Andrea Kimi Antonelli clinched the Formula 1 drivers' championship at the Mexico City Grand Prix, finishing third to seal the title and break Sebastian Vettel's record as the sport's youngest-ever world champion by three years.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was in tears as he crossed the line at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez on Sunday, becoming Formula 1’s youngest-ever world champion at the age of 20. The Mercedes driver finished third in Mexico City, a result that was enough to seal the title regardless of what his rivals did — though he still picked off Charles Leclerc late in the race to claim a podium on the day he made history.
Antonelli’s triumph breaks Sebastian Vettel’s previous record by three years and makes him the first Italian world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953 — only the third Italian to win the title after Giuseppe Farina (1950) and Ascari (1952, 1953).
“Thank you so much, we did it,” Antonelli said through tears as he crossed the line. His race engineer Peter Bonnington replied: “Beautiful work, Kimi. It’s been a pleasure being part of the journey with you, but this is just the first chapter.”
After climbing from his Mercedes W17, Antonelli embraced his father, mother and sister before being mobbed by his mechanics and receiving a hug from team principal Toto Wolff. “I wouldn’t be here without Mercedes, without my family,” he said. “I’m very grateful for this moment, and it’s one that will live forever. I’m just speechless. I’m trying to process what has just happened.”
Antonelli shared the podium with race winner Max Verstappen and second-placed Lewis Hamilton — his Mercedes predecessor and the man whose seat he inherited this season. The symbolism was not lost on anyone in the paddock.
“It’s been an incredible season, and to share this podium with Max and Lewis is truly incredible,” Antonelli said. “I’m looking forward to some more battles in the future.”
Four-time champion Verstappen was generous in his praise. “What a season he had, and to do that at such an age — it’s just really, really impressive. I’m very proud of him.”
Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, added: “Youngest world champion ever. It’s pretty phenomenal, and I’m so grateful to be in the race to witness it.”
Neither Russell nor Hamilton won the race, meaning Antonelli did not even need to finish to be crowned, but his composed drive underlined the controlled authority that has defined his championship campaign.
