Garcia targets featherweight title shot with upset win over Lopes at UFC White House

Steve Garcia enters the UFC White House card as a heavy underdog against Diego Lopes on Sunday, but the featherweight contender insists a dominant performance over the two-time title challenger will make him impossible to ignore at 145 pounds.

Garcia, ranked No. 12 at featherweight, faces Lopes, who sits at No. 3 in the division, in the opening bout of the card. Despite the ranking gap, Garcia believes the matchup represents his clearest path yet to a title shot — and he is not planning to leave the outcome to the judges.

“Having an opponent like Diego Lopes, knowing where his ranking is at — having the opportunity to fight someone that high, challenging myself, but also being able to put myself in a position where I could challenge for the title… I’m just gonna go out there and dominate him,” Garcia said in an interview with the UFC. “Dominate him from the start of the bell to the end of the bell. I don’t care how I get it done; it just has to happen. I’m not gonna give away [my plan], but don’t blink; there’s a reason why we’re the first fight to open up the card.”

Garcia (19-5) arrives on a seven-fight winning streak stretching back to 2022, with six of those victories coming by way of finish. The 29-year-old, nicknamed “Mean Machine”, has built his case quietly but consistently, and a win over a fighter of Lopes’s calibre would represent the biggest result of his career.

Lopes (27-8) enters the bout having fallen short in back-to-back title challenges against Alexander Volkanovski, with a stoppage win over Jean Silva sandwiched between those championship bids. Despite the recent setbacks at the top of the division, the Brazilian remains one of the most dangerous finishers in the featherweight rankings and a formidable obstacle for any contender looking to make a statement.
