Gaethje's coach Wittman backs Aleksandre Topuria's corner stoppage of Ilia at UFC 250
Trevor Wittman, Justin Gaethje's head coach, has defended Aleksandre Topuria's decision to stop his brother Ilia before the fifth round of their undisputed lightweight title fight at UFC Freedom 250, saying the corner made the right call when Ilia indicated he could not continue.
Trevor Wittman, the veteran coach in Justin Gaethje’s corner at UFC Freedom 250, has publicly backed Aleksandre Topuria’s controversial decision to pull his brother Ilia from their undisputed lightweight title fight before the fifth round. Gaethje (29-5) had challenged Ilia Topuria (17-1) for the belt last month, entering the bout as a significant underdog.
Despite Ilia’s status as a heavy favourite, Gaethje inflicted severe damage across the third and fourth rounds, leaving the champion barely able to see by the time the fourth ended. Aleksandre stepped in and forced a stoppage before the fifth could begin — a call that drew scrutiny from some observers, particularly given that a ringside doctor had also appeared close to halting the contest at the end of the third.
Wittman, speaking on the ONX Sport podcast, said the language barrier initially obscured what had actually happened in the Topuria corner, but that the full picture vindicated Aleksandre’s choice entirely.
“Ilia’s brother did the right thing to stop the fight,” Wittman said. “I didn’t hear what he said until I understood that language, where he was like, ‘We’re gonna finish the fight.’ He was talking to the ref, he wasn’t talking to Ilia. So I took it as, Ilia was like, ‘Dude I can’t go on.’ And when you hear that from your athlete, you have to make the right choice.”
Wittman’s comments carry particular weight given that he was on the opposite side of the corner that night. The experienced coach argued that a fighter’s safety must be the primary concern of any cornerman, and that Aleksandre demonstrated exactly that responsibility when Ilia signalled he was done.
The stoppage remains one of the more debated moments from the card, with some questioning whether Ilia should have been allowed to answer the bell for the fifth. Wittman’s endorsement adds a notable voice to those who believe Aleksandre made the correct — and courageous — call.
