Justin Gaethje is the undisputed UFC lightweight champion after stopping previously undefeated Ilia Topuria at UFC White House on Sunday, delivering one of the most remarkable upsets in MMA history. Topuria’s corner threw in the towel between rounds after a punishing third frame left the Georgian-Spanish star with both eyes bruised, cut and nearly closed.

Gaethje endured a difficult opening two rounds, absorbing a devastating right hand and a liver shot that had him in serious trouble. But the 36-year-old dug deep in the third, systematically breaking Topuria down with relentless volume. A final knee to the ribs just before the horn sent Topuria stumbling to his corner, where his coaches decided to end the fight — handing Topuria the first defeat of his professional career.

“I’m from America. 250 years ago we were way bigger than 6-to-1 dogs and look at us thriving now,” Gaethje said after the fight. “I know that was absolutely legendary because I cannot even believe it.”

Gaethje, long considered an automatic first-ballot UFC Hall of Famer for his relentless fighting style, had gone into the contest widely regarded as a heavy underdog. He revealed afterwards that he used the fear of embarrassment as fuel.

“I told myself I was going to lose,” Gaethje said. “I told myself I was going to get embarrassed so I could go to my most primal place and dig deep — and I had to. That guy had me in trouble. He had me rocked. Rocked my chin. Smoked my liver and I stuck in it.”

Topuria, who had looked virtually untouchable since joining the UFC and had previously captured the featherweight title in similarly emphatic fashion, moved up to lightweight for this contest and suffered his first professional defeat. The stoppage came via corner retirement rather than referee intervention, but the damage Gaethje inflicted left little doubt about the outcome.

“My durability, my tenacity and my heart will carry through those first two rounds and nobody can outwork me in round three and especially the championship rounds four and five,” Gaethje said. “Hard work, baby. I am made for these moments. This sport was made for me. I’ve shown you why. I’m the most consistent, most exciting guy that’s ever been in this cage. Unmatched, I’m telling you.”

For Gaethje, the victory represents the culmination of a career defined by spectacular, high-stakes performances. He now holds the undisputed lightweight title — the one prize that had eluded him throughout a storied run at the top of the division.
