Gaethje embraces 5-to-1 underdog role ahead of Topuria lightweight title fight at UFC White House

Justin Gaethje is a heavy betting underdog against Ilia Topuria at UFC White House on June 14, but the two-time interim lightweight champion is drawing inspiration from the 1980 'Miracle on Ice' as he pursues what may be his final shot at an undisputed UFC title.

Justin Gaethje enters his undisputed lightweight title fight against Ilia Topuria at UFC White House on June 14 as a near 5-to-1 betting underdog — and he says he wouldn’t have it any other way.

The two-time interim lightweight champion, who most recently upset Paddy Pimblett to claim the interim belt at UFC 324 in January, acknowledged that Topuria’s status as a heavy favourite makes logical sense. “He knocked out Max Holloway; Max Holloway knocked me out. He knocked out Charles Oliveira; Charles Oliveira finished me,” Gaethje told TMZ Sports. “So, it makes perfect sense.”

But Gaethje is framing the bout as something bigger than a title fight. Speaking ahead of what is expected to be one of the most-watched events in UFC history, he invoked the 1980 US Olympic hockey team’s improbable victory over the Soviet Union as the template for what he hopes to achieve. “This is Miracle On Ice type of energy that I’m trying to drive into this country,” he said. “And I have an opportunity to do something special. I could not ask for anything better.”

Gaethje also pushed back on the narrative that his underdog status is unusual. “I’ve had 15 fights in UFC, I think I’ve been the underdog 13 times. I’ve won 10 of those fights,” he said, adding: “Why? I don’t know.” His actual record as an underdog is slightly more modest — he has gone 8-3 in 11 fights where he entered as the betting underdog — but the broader point stands: Gaethje has consistently outperformed market expectations throughout his UFC career.

For Gaethje, the stakes at UFC White House extend beyond the belt. At 36, this fight is widely considered his last realistic opportunity to hold undisputed UFC gold, having twice fallen short at the championship level before capturing the interim title earlier this year.

The card also features an interim heavyweight title fight between Alex Pereira and Ciryl Gane.
