From Man Utd hero Lee Sharpe to £35m Georginio Rutter: Leeds' biggest transfer record breakers
Leeds United have shattered their club transfer record multiple times across the Premier League era, from Lee Sharpe and Tomas Brolin in the 1990s to Georginio Rutter's £35m arrival in 2024.
Leeds United have broken their club transfer record on several occasions across the Premier League era, with signings ranging from a former Manchester United winger to a World Cup icon and a modern-day £35m striker.
Manager Daniel Farke is expected to pursue further marquee additions this summer after Leeds exceeded expectations in their first season back in the top flight, finishing 14th. Chairman Paraag Marathe has signalled ambition in the current window, suggesting the club could target what he described as “high creative differential players” — or, in his words, “moonshots.”
Among the names currently linked are Fulham’s Harry Wilson on a free transfer and Germany international Julian Brandt. But ahead of any new arrivals, here is a look back at three of the most significant record-breaking signings in the club’s recent history.
Lee Sharpe
The former Manchester United winger became Howard Wilkinson’s final signing as Leeds manager when he arrived for a joint-club-record £4.5 million in August 1996. Sharpe had won three Premier League titles at Old Trafford, but the emergence of the Class of ‘92 had squeezed him out of Ferguson’s plans.
The move never truly took off. Wilkinson was replaced by George Graham just a month after Sharpe’s arrival, and while the England international made 26 league appearances and scored five goals in his debut season, injury derailed his second campaign entirely. He was loaned to Bradford City in March 1999 and sold permanently that summer for £250,000.
Tomas Brolin
Sharpe’s £4.5m fee was matched by Tomas Brolin, who had arrived a year earlier from Parma. The Swedish forward had been part of an iconic Parma side that won the UEFA Cup, the Coppa Italia, and the Cup Winners’ Cup, and had helped Sweden finish third at the 1994 World Cup — form that made his signing feel like a genuine coup.
Leeds, however, never saw Brolin at his best. Injuries restricted him to 19 league appearances and four goals across his only season at the club. He was loaned to FC Zurich, returned briefly to Parma, and then joined Crystal Palace in November 1997 before retiring at just 28.
Georginio Rutter
Leeds’ most expensive signing to date is Georginio Rutter, who arrived for £35m as the club fought to retain their Premier League status. The French forward represented a significant statement of intent and set a new benchmark for spending at Elland Road.
