Frank McCourt’s fortune now stands at $1.548 billion according to the latest Forbes ranking, up $48 million — roughly 3% — from the March edition. A marginal increase that will change nothing about Olympique de Marseille’s financial situation.

This revaluation is mainly linked to the evolution of the American owner’s real estate assets and his investments through McCourt Global. It does not alter the constraints weighing on the Phocaean club: subject to DNCG requirements, OM must self-finance through player sales and reduce its wage bill. Last summer, the club signed no players despite significant departures.

A native of Boston, Frank McCourt is the heir to a family that built its fortune constructing roads in the United States before turning to real estate. His most resounding sports move came in 2012, when he sold the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball franchise for more than two billion dollars. Four years later, in October 2016, he bought OM for approximately €50 million — at a time when his fortune was estimated at just over one billion dollars.

Ten years after his arrival on the Canebière, McCourt remains a billionaire, but slightly richer. For Marseille supporters hoping for an ambitious transfer window, the news brings no new prospects.
