Spain qualified for the 2026 World Cup semi-finals by beating Belgium 2-1 thanks to a goal from Mikel Merino in the 88th minute, and will face France in a rematch of the Euro 2024 semi-final.
Brought on in the second half, Merino once again played the hero for La Roja. Already the author of the winning goal against Portugal in extra time, the midfielder repeated the feat against the Belgians, giving Luis de la Fuente a ticket to the last four in the final moments of the match.
For Kylian Mbappé’s France team, the opponent is known and feared. It was indeed Spain that eliminated the Blues in the Euro 2024 semi-final, winning to reach the continental tournament final. The clash between the two nations therefore takes on added significance, with revenge at stake on the world stage.
