Paulo Fonseca is under fire after a week of contradictory statements that have drawn as much scrutiny to his communication as to his sporting results.

It all started after Lyon’s defeat to Fenerbahçe in the UEFA Champions League, when the Portuguese manager himself admitted he was « perhaps a shit manager ». A few days later, ahead of hosting Le Havre, he claimed instead to be « the best manager in OL’s recent history ». A tonal shift that did not go unnoticed, especially as the match against HAC ended in a disappointing 1-1 draw, following the Gones’ European elimination.

Consultant Walid Acherchour reacted sharply to these outbursts: « He can’t set himself on fire like that. I have a big problem with Fonseca: a bit like De Zerbi at OM, I think he sees himself bigger than the club. » He also recalled the context in which the manager took over: « He took over OL in fourth place with a crazy team and finished sixth in his first season. » Acherchour also stressed that Fonseca is the best-paid coach in Ligue 1 behind Luis Enrique, which makes his stance even more untenable in his view: « You have the right to criticize your work and be unhappy when you’re not winning. When you’re in that position, it’s never a good sign for a club. »

The sequence illustrates growing tension around the Lyon manager, whose mixed record — a win at Toulouse, a good draw at Fenerbahçe, then European elimination and a draw against Le Havre — struggles to quell questions about his future at the helm of the Rhône club.
