Five straight defeats, 17th place: Genesio addresses his future after Classique loss

Olympique de Marseille conceded a fifth straight defeat on Sunday at the Vélodrome, beaten 1-2 by Paris Saint-Germain in Matchday 5 of Ligue 1. The club, which started the season top of the table, now sits in 17th place, in the relegation zone.

Long competitive, Marseille fell behind to Ferran Torres’ opening goal in the 66th minute before equalizing through Angel Gomes. Marquinhos restored PSG’s advantage shortly after, sealing the 2-1 scoreline.

At his press conference, Bruno Genesio refused to settle for a performance he deemed courageous. “This is not an honorable defeat that will satisfy me. We often lose on the same mistakes,” he said. The manager nonetheless praised his players’ commitment: “This group gave everything tonight and did even more than everything. It stood up to the best team in Europe. But I cannot be satisfied with that.”

When asked about his future, Genesio acknowledged the gravity of the situation. “It is not normal that OM is in this situation,” he admitted to Ligue 1. “It is insufficient, I assume my share of responsibility, as others will have to as well,” he added, clarifying that he needed to “speak with my officials.” Asked about a possible resignation, he replied: “For now I am not there, I will digest this defeat.” To the press, he was more direct: “There is no idea of resigning.”

The Marseille manager hopes the post-international break schedule, with trips to Troyes and Angers, will allow OM to return to winning ways. He warned, however: “We know that every match in Ligue 1 is difficult. Over recent matches, we are not being paid, but we have not done enough to deserve better either.”

This poor run comes four days after a heavy 1-4 defeat at Besiktas in the Ligue Europa, which had already weakened Genesio’s position on the Marseille bench.
