Fiji's Kuruvoli handed permanent red card for kicking Genge as England lead 35-3 at half-time
Fiji scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli was permanently sent off by referee Hollie Davidson after kicking Ellis Genge in the chest during the Nations Championship clash at Hill Dickinson Stadium, compounding a miserable first half that left Fiji trailing England 35-3.
Fiji scrumhalf Simione Kuruvoli was issued a permanent red card by referee Hollie Davidson for kicking England loosehead prop Ellis Genge in the chest during the Nations Championship match at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday. The dismissal came just before half-time, with Fiji already being dismantled by a dominant England side who led 35-3 at the break.
The incident unfolded moments after Fiji had a would-be try disallowed. TMO review footage showed Genge briefly holding Kuruvoli following a tackle, but replays confirmed the England forward had fully released the scrumhalf before Kuruvoli kicked back firmly into his chest. Davidson found no mitigation and wasted no time in delivering the ultimate sanction, stating explicitly that Kuruvoli was not being held at the precise moment he delivered the kick.
Although some replays indicated Genge had momentarily held Kuruvoli’s boot during the initial entanglement, Davidson determined it was insufficient to justify the retaliation. The act was widely condemned, with reaction on social media describing it as “pretty disgusting,” “senseless,” and “headless stuff” driven by “sheer petulance.”
The red card compounded what was already a wretched afternoon for Fiji in Liverpool. Kalaveti Ravouvou had just crossed for what would have been the Islanders’ first try of the match when the incident occurred, making the dismissal all the more damaging. Fiji went into the break having barely threatened a relentless England outfit.
For England, the result carried significant weight. Head coach Steve Borthwick’s side entered the fixture needing a win to arrest a five-Test losing run and relieve mounting pressure on his regime. His team selection — which included the return of Tommy Freeman on the wing and in-form veteran Henry Slade at outside centre — was vindicated emphatically by a dominant set-piece performance that Fiji had no answer to.
Despite Fiji’s well-documented ability to score from anywhere on the pitch, their vulnerability against a powerful England pack was exposed from the outset, and Kuruvoli’s dismissal ensured there would be no route back into the contest in the second half.
