Hometown lock Josh Caulfield returns to Bristol Bears after one season away
Bristol Bears have re-signed lock Josh Caulfield from Championship side Ealing Trailfinders, with the 29-year-old Bristolian rejoining Pat Lam's squad to strengthen their second-row options ahead of the new Premiership season.
Bristol Bears have brought lock Josh Caulfield back to Ashton Gate, signing the 29-year-old from Championship club Ealing Trailfinders after a single season away from Premiership rugby.
Caulfield originally joined Bristol in the summer of 2023 following London Irish’s collapse into administration, going on to make 36 appearances for the West Country club before departing in 2025. His return addresses a specific need in Pat Lam’s squad, with the Director of Rugby looking to add depth and experience to his back-five forward group.
A reliable set-piece operator and physical ball carrier, Caulfield brings familiarity with Bristol’s systems from the outset — a factor Lam was keen to highlight. “Josh is a proud Bristolian, and we’re delighted to welcome him back to the club,” Lam said. “He already understands our environment, our culture and the way we want to play, so he’s a natural fit for the group. He’s hugely respected and well-liked by the boys and having that genuine connection to the club is something we really value.”
Lam added that Caulfield’s work ethic and drive were equally important considerations. “Josh is a hard worker with a real drive to succeed, and we’re excited to have him back. We know he’ll bring quality and experience on the field, while also adding more depth to our back five group of forwards.”
For Caulfield, the move carries personal significance beyond the professional. “Coming back to Bristol Bears is something I’m incredibly proud of,” he said. “This is my hometown club, and to have the opportunity to represent the city again means everything to me and my family. I can’t wait to reconnect with the lads, get stuck into pre-season and do everything I can to help the team have a successful year. Pulling on the Bears shirt at Ashton Gate again is going to be a really special moment.”
Before his time at Bristol, Caulfield built his career across a number of English clubs, including spells at Cornish Pirates, Exeter and Wasps, before landing at London Irish prior to the Exiles’ administration.
