Fernandez slots straight in on debut as 10-man City edge Coventry to stay perfect

Enzo Fernandez made an immediate impact on his Manchester City debut, slotting seamlessly into Pep Guardiola’s — now Enzo Maresca’s — system as City ground out a 1-0 Premier League win over Coventry City. Erling Haaland’s thumping first-half header, converting Antoine Semenyo’s cross after the Norwegian had cleared from his own box moments earlier, was enough to secure three points and keep City’s record perfect through three matchdays.

Fernandez, who joined on deadline day in a club-record £125m move, had only completed two training sessions before being called into the starting XI — and only then because Nico O’Reilly pulled up injured in the warm-up. The Argentine World Cup winner played high up the pitch, linking intelligently with Rayan Cherki and Haaland, and made the key pass that set up the move leading to the goal. For a player with so little preparation time, the transition was striking.

The ease of that transition speaks to something broader about City’s summer. Maresca’s squad has visibly strengthened with each of the opening three matchdays. Elliot Anderson, the £116m signing, purred through midfield before being withdrawn after an hour as he builds match fitness. Cherki was again at the heart of City’s creativity. And Fernandez, already the player in the squad most familiar with Maresca’s system from their time together at Chelsea, needed no settling-in period.

The depth City have assembled in midfield is arguably their most significant statement of the window. When O’Reilly was injured before the Bournemouth fixture, Anderson was not yet fit enough to cover adequately and Marc Guehi was pressed into an unfamiliar midfield role. Before the Crystal Palace game, Ayyoub Bouaddi — the £85m arrival from Lille — may have been required to play a bigger part than planned. Against Coventry, Fernandez simply stepped in.

Coventry, of course, are not a barometer for title contenders, and City were made to hang on — Maresca was visibly frustrated when five minutes of stoppage time were added in the second half, more so than Coventry manager Frank Lampard. There were moments when City should have added to their lead, and the margin of victory flattered neither side’s performance.

But the broader picture is one of a squad still finding its ceiling. The pieces are falling into place faster than most expected, and the prospect of City at full strength — with O’Reilly fit, Anderson fully sharp, and Fernandez fully integrated — will concern the rest of the division.
