Ferdinand urges United to stand firm as 15-year-old Gabriel eyes Old Trafford exit

Manchester United face a battle to retain 15-year-old academy attacker JJ Gabriel after the highly-rated forward asked the club to cancel his contract at Old Trafford earlier this month, with Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich all reported to be monitoring his situation.

Gabriel, who turns 16 on 6 October, cannot negotiate with overseas clubs until that date, but the teenager is said to harbour ambitions of playing in Spain, with the two Madrid giants understood to be in pole position after he recently visited both clubs.

Rio Ferdinand, speaking publicly on the matter, urged United not to be seen to capitulate. “I think we need to understand the reasons why he wants to leave the club,” the former United and England defender said. “It’s not a 15-year-old making this call on his own — his family may have their reasons why. Are they being impatient, are they thinking he should have got minutes already, were they promised stuff and now they’re disgruntled?”

Ferdinand stressed the broader implications for the club’s standing in the youth market. “There will be other kids using this as a reference point, so you can’t be seen to be weak as a football club. Whatever the outcome, Manchester United have to remain strong in this.”

The timing is particularly frustrating for United given Gabriel’s recent form. Just a week before his exit request became known, the forward scored a hat-trick in a 5-0 UEFA Youth League victory over Sabah. He had also been in line to feature in the Carabao Cup against Brighton before those plans were shelved once his intentions became clear.

Ferdinand recalled watching Gabriel in training alongside Bruno Fernandes. “At 15 years old, that would have been enough for me,” he said. “But maybe he’s got aspirations and wants to be playing already.”

Should Gabriel leave for a club outside England before turning 18, United would stand to lose significant training compensation — a financial blow that compounds the sporting one.

The club have moved to reinforce their youth ranks in recent weeks regardless, bringing in midfielders Karrim Casim and David Eze from Manchester City and forward Isaac Konde from Liverpool. United are also reported to be tracking Lens starlet Mezian Mesloub, a 16-year-old who scored the winner on his Ligue 1 debut in May, though Premier League rules and post-Brexit regulations present complications for any potential deal.
