Radamel Falcao has no regrets about his ill-fated loan spell at Manchester United in 2014-15, despite admitting the experience left him in tears and yielded just four goals in 29 appearances under Louis van Gaal.

The Colombian striker arrived at Old Trafford in September 2014 still carrying the physical and psychological scars of a serious knee injury sustained at Monaco the previous season. His mentor and former agent, Silvano Espindola, later told AS Colombia that the situation had taken a heavy emotional toll. “I am not going to tell you that he feels happy because he isn’t,” Espindola said. “We speak many times and we cry together. It is not an easy situation because every player wants to play and every goalscorer wants to score goals.”

Espindola also revealed that Falcao, then 29, was left “scared” when asked to feature for United’s under-21 side, drawing a direct parallel to the lower-league match in France in which he had originally suffered the knee injury. “In these matches, they are accustomed to fighting and going in hard,” he said.

Monaco head coach Leonardo Jardim had publicly criticised the loan move at the time, arguing that Falcao should have concentrated on regaining full fitness at his parent club. In hindsight, that concern proved well-founded. As the season wore on, Falcao found first-team opportunities increasingly scarce and his confidence visibly diminished.

Yet the striker himself chose to frame the experience differently. On returning to Monaco, he said: “I had the opportunity to play in the Premier League, and I did it. I have kept the positive things of that experience. I developed as a player but also as a man.”

The redemption arc that followed was remarkable. After a second wasted loan season at Chelsea, Falcao rediscovered his best form at Monaco, firing the club to the Ligue 1 title in 2016-17 alongside a teenage Kylian Mbappe.

Now 40, Falcao is still playing for Colombian club Millonarios, having joined in 2024. The Old Trafford chapter will be back in the spotlight this week as Atletico Madrid — the club where he made his name, winning the Europa League and Copa del Rey across two seasons — host United in the Champions League. United arrive in Madrid on the back of a 4-0 opening win over Sabah, while Diego Simeone’s side lost 2-1 at Liverpool in their opening fixture.
