Fagerson and Steyn return as Glasgow make eight changes to face Sale in Champions Cup
Zander Fagerson and Kyle Steyn are set to make their first appearances of the season as Glasgow name a much-changed side for Saturday's Investec Champions Cup pool match at Sale, with debutant Ruwald van der Merwe also handed a start.
Zander Fagerson and Kyle Steyn will both start for Glasgow Warriors at CorpAcq Stadium on Saturday as the Scottish club open their Investec Champions Cup campaign against Sale Sharks, with head coach Franco Smith making eight changes from the side that beat Connacht in the United Rugby Championship last Friday.
The influential Scotland internationals have been sidelined since the start of the season but return directly to the starting XV after recovering from their respective injuries. Forwards Euan Ferrie and Alex Craig are also back in the fold following lay-offs, giving Smith a significantly bolstered selection for the European opener.
South African number eight Ruwald van der Merwe will make his Glasgow debut after joining recently from the Pumas. Smith said the new signing had earned his opportunity through his work since arriving at the club. “Ruwald has worked hard since arriving in Glasgow to put himself in the best position possible, and has earned his opportunity to start tomorrow,” the head coach said.
Smith added that the returning players had applied themselves diligently during their recoveries. “We are also pleased to welcome Kyle, Alex, Zander and Euan back into the line-up — each player has been diligent in their work with our medical and strength and conditioning teams, ensuring that they are in the best shape for their return.”
The Warriors head coach acknowledged the challenge ahead. “We look forward to getting our Champions Cup campaign under way against a Sale Sharks squad that we know will provide a strong, physical test in front of their home supporters,” he said.
The occasion carries a sombre dimension. Sale will pay tribute to former lock Hyron Andrews, who died at the Lions’ team hotel ahead of their Champions Cup match away to La Rochelle this weekend. Smith offered his condolences on behalf of the Glasgow club. “On behalf of everyone at Glasgow, I would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Lions, Hyron’s family, friends and team-mates following the tragic loss,” he said.
